How Does Climate Shape Our Health, Identity,
and Community?

Discussion Questions

These questions are just to start and aid discussion. Please skip around in the list, indulge diversions, and let your discussion develop naturally.

More questions may be added as the event approaches.

  1. How much were your mood, health, and life circumstances impacted by this past winter? Were there any positive impacts?

  2. What are you looking forward to this spring/summer? For some folks in Canada, the relatively short warm-weather seasons cause a more casual, fun, and peaceful experience than the rest of the year. Is this your experience? If it isn't your experience, do you see this phenomenon in wider society? Since there are costs associated with a lot of activities, how can we make the best aspects of the summer season more equitably available to everyone?

  3. What changes in your life practically, emotionally, or relationally when the spring and summer arrives?

  4. Has climate change impacted you personally? Have you seen differences develop over your lifetime? How do you cope with strings of extremely smokey days in a row? How can we engage personal climate change impacts as a larger society given the polarized debate about human caused climate change?

  5. How does the environment shape us as individuals? How does it shape our culture/s? How much choice do you have over what you experience in our larger environment (IE: Are you able to get outside very often? Are the mountains easily accessible for you or difficult to travel to)? Do you, or people you know, encounter barriers to experiencing the positive aspects of the part of the world we live in?

  6. The (very old) song at the bottom of the videos below is the title for this conversation. It includes both happy summer memories, and the melancholy of end-of-life reflections. How do you find yourself emotionally affected by the climate crisis? Does enjoyment of nice weather hold melancholy for you now? Are younger generations able to enjoy the out-of-doors as much as older ones did when they were young?

  7. Do you have any reflections on the information in the first two videos below?
