Discussion Questions

These questions are just to help get the discussion going. They do not need to be discussed in order and conversation outside of the bounds of these questions is welcome.

  1. What were the major influences on the process of socialization you went through in your formative years?

  2. What social influences have an impact on you now?

  3. One of the definitions of socialization is, "the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society." Has what is acceptable to society changed over your lifetime? In polarized times like we live in now, are there many points of agreement on what is acceptable to society?

  4. How does social media shape socialization now? Would you have answered this question differently 10 or 15 years ago? Have you encountered the influence of social media in the lives of any children, tweens, teenagers, or young adults that you know well?

  5. Given the destructive influences of some social media platforms, should community organizations like KB be selective in which platforms they are on, avoid all social media, or participate fully?

  6. Have you attempted to overcome, or re-write any socialization you experienced in the past? With or without your consent, have you ever gone through the process of "resocialization" as described in the video below (7:08)? Have you encountered other people who have been resocialized by a "total institution" as described in the video?

  7. Have you ever been very active in the socialization process for another life (As a parent, aunt, uncle, family friend, pet keeper, teacher, guardian, caregiver etc).

  8. What does socialization look like in other formative life stages beyond childhood and adolescence?

  9. By virtue of participating in this discussion you're contributing to socialization right now, as well as being socialized. What role should churches and/or community groups like KB play in socialization?

  10. Apart from the resocialization questions above, did other aspects of the "Socialization Crash Course" video below introduce topics you'd like to discuss?
